A church sign in Morristown was slashed hours after Pride Flags were put on display, according to church members.
The sign that reads “All Are Welcome” at the Church of the Redeemer, an Episcopal Church, was found damaged over the weekend.
Pride Month is in June. The church says this year they put the flags up ten days early to honor a 69-year-old lesbian member who died of COVID-19.
The church held a celebration of life on Saturday. And in a Facebook invite, all were encouraged to wear festive clothing.
“It’s disheartening knowing that there is somebody who doesn’t appreciate who we are and what we do. But, historically now, for decades, Redeemer has been a voice for the voiceless. It’s been a place where everyone knows that they are welcomed. What this says to us, is that we have more work to do,” said Rev. Cynthia Black.
There is a donation link to help replace the sign. The church says the damage costs over $15,000.
Police are investigating the incident.
